Zach Schoberl ‘20, has played football, soccer and baseball for the Gryphons, and has accepted a preferred walk spot on the Virginia Military Institute football team next fall. VMI is a Division 1 program located in Lexington, Virginia and offers a rigorous education that includes a broad undergraduate program with majors in engineering, science, liberal arts, and social sciences. Woven into every curriculum is leadership and character development that benefit graduates for life. The opportunity to participate in football is an exciting one for Zach. Yet, it is his time at Crystal that he appreciates the most. "Crystal athletics taught me to look at every challenge as the next obstacle to tackle. I am grateful for the coach who created an environment to get better each practice."
"Zach is one of the best athletes that we have ever coached out on the field," said Head Coach Mario Caprini. "He has great footwork, solid hands, is strong and has an unmatched work ethic. His mastery on the defensive side though this season truly cemented his legacy at Crystal as the most disruptive force on the defensive side that has ever come through here."
VMI plays in the Southern Conference, and finished 5-7 overall last season, facing schools like Marshall, Western Carolina, Army, Furman and Wofford. He will have the opportunity to walk on to benefit the VMI program. "Zach knows what it takes to be great, he knows what it takes to get the job done and that is why we relied on him so much. He is a natural leader and an absolute force in everything he does," said Caprini.
"Though I am excited about next year, I will always remember the great feeling of taking the field as a Gryphon. I will always take that with me," said Zach.
